John, from Maggie’s cafe in lower Stuart St, was the poster dog of the Dunedin City Council’s dog registration campaign and the dunedinnz.com insiders campaign, from which a giant image of John greets arrivals to Dunedin Airport, and appeared in magazines highlighting neat places to visit in the city, as well as several times in the columns of this newspaper.

He died on Thursday, after being diagnosed with cancer only a few weeks ago.

John also dipped a paw into local body affairs as the dog face of efforts to encourage submissions on allowing dogs on leads in the central city area. The city council is to make its decision on that later this month.

The unexpected death of the 5-year-old Shar Pei is being mourned by Maggie’s regulars and friends.

Maggie’s regular Kim Clifton said his name should probably have been Lord John.

"He was regal, even in the way he moved around. He really was lord of the manor, and we loved him."

An intelligent dog, John knew what he liked.

"He was friendly, but not needy at all and he was discerning," she said.

John’s owner and co-owner of Maggie’s, Troy Butler, said John had been a "dream pet" who had coped extremely well with the constant busyness and attention in the cafe.

He would be sorely missed by many.
