A man has been freed from a car after they crashed into a power pole on Portobello Rd earlier this morning.

Emergency services attended the crash which briefly closed Portobello Rd, after a car hit a pole at the bottom of Howard St just before Glenfalloch Gardens.

A police spokesman said they were called to the crash about 5.50am this morning.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said they freed the man who was trapped and secured the vehicle.

A witness at the scene said the driver was assessed by St John and appeared to be fine.

Another witness at the scene said the power pole that was hit was "pretty munted".

Aurora Energy spokesman Gary Johnson said the pole was in the process of being replaced and would take up to 3-4 hours.
