Captain Madi Gyde guides a crew of keen newbies on Otago Harbour in Dunedin yesterday.

The Dunedin dragon boat team Ōtepoti Dragons hosted a "give it a go day" for the public to try out dragon boating at the weekend.

About 15 people gathered at the marina in Magnet St to take part in the session, led by Ms Gyde and her team.

The Ōtepoti Dragons is training for the World Dragon Boat Club Crew Championships in Italy in September.

The New Zealand Dragon Boat Association said dragon boating originated from Chinese culture, and dates back over 2000 years.

It said dragon boating was one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world, with over 50 million paddlers participating annually.
