Diverse programme for awareness week

An expanded variety show and appearances by black belt karate exponent John Marrable and former All Black Frank Bunce are among the highlights of Dunedin's latest Diversity Week, which starts today.

The week aims to provide fun entertainment and to raise awareness about disability issues, co-ordinator David Howard says.

Dunedin musician Bevan Gardiner will sing during the opening event, which starts at 6pm at the Mary Hopewell Theatre, University of Otago College of Education.

In a "Transformers"segment, the audience will this evening vote for its favourite creatively-modified wheelchair.

John Marrable, a black belt karate exponent who uses a wheelchair, will be in action at noon on Wednesday at a Sportability Expo, a "Give It a Go Day", at the Edgar Centre.

Wheelchair basketball (11am) and Special Olympics football (1pm) will also be demonstrated during the expo, which runs from 10am to 2.30pm.

Frank Bunce will appear as a compere during the Diversity Dance, starting at noon on Saturday at the Dunedin Town Hall.

The Idea Services variety show, which proved popular at last year's Diversity Week, has been switched to a bigger venue, the College of Education Auditorium in Union St east.

This year's show, titled Excuse Me, You're Blocking My Sun, will be held at 11am on Friday and and 7pm on Saturday.
