The growing level of street violence in Dunedin has prompted Channel 9 to screen a live panel discussion with some of the city's leaders on the issue next week.
Channel 9 producer and presenter Mark Hathaway said there had been a lot of publicity recently about serious assaults in the inner city's streets. A man has been charged with manslaughter after the death of Stephen Francis Radnoty (51) earlier this month.
"I think when people are getting seriously beaten up, just for walking down the street, there's a definite issue in the community," Mr Hathaway said.
"As a community station, we've got an opportunity to address the issue."
Mr Hathaway will host a discussion panel on Tuesday, at 7.30pm, which will include Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull, National MP Michael Woodhouse, Dunedin Clutha Police Area Commander Inspector Dave Campbell, and a representative from Dunedin Hospital emergency department.
Mr Hathaway said the panel would discuss possible solutions and raise awareness of the problem, so Dunedin residents could be informed of the danger.
