Thirty years after the closure of the DIC department store, ex-colleagues decided to celebrate with one last hurrah before wrapping up their annual reunions.

About 50 former staff of the store got together at the Rope and Twine restaurant on Saturday evening for one last meal together.

The DIC closed in 1991, and the building is now occupied by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery,

Organiser Chris Obbeek said it was time to call time on the reunions.

"There’s not many of us left."

Many of the attendees were getting too old for the meet-ups, and 30 years after the closing of the store was a good place to end them.

She met her husband Tony Obbeek at the store in 1975.

The closure of large department stores was a sad thing, Mr Obbeek said, as they had a special feeling about them that was unlike stores today.

Bernice Hutchison (73) started at the store in 1964, where she worked in the haberdashery department.

All her memories of the store were fond, she said.

One particular memory she enjoyed recalling was when she would tell off staff for using the fire escape steps as a general entrance.

"I would yell at them and tell them that if they fell they wouldn’t get their ACC."

All the former colleagues were one big happy family, and the reunions had been great fun, she said.

Before they started meeting up she would see old workmates around town, and it was nice to have an official event with them.

She was sad it was their last reunion, but there came a time for everything, she said.
