An alleged drink-driver tried to slap a police officer after he was woken from his slumber while snoozing in his car at a South Dunedin supermarket.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to Woolworths Andersons Bay at 7pm yesterday after members of the public saw a man asleep in his car, which was still running, in the carpark.
When police arrived, they watched the supermarket’s CCTV footage and saw the allegedly drunk 37-year-old man pull into the carpark before dozing off.
Officers woke the man and had him undergo breath testing procedures. He recorded a breath alcohol of 899mcg — over three times the legal limit of 250mcg.
The man had previous drink-driving convictions and had conditions to have zero alcohol while driving, Snr Sgt Bond said.
As officers tried to arrest the man, he ‘‘lashed out’’, tried to slap an officer’s hand and to push the police, to avoid being handcuffed.
Police got him under control and he was arrested and charged with resisting police and drink-driving.
He is due to appear in Dunedin District Court on Thursday.
