Cyclists talk safety over free breakfast

The Dunedin Railway Station lawn was filled with a plethora of bikes and their riders yesterday as the city’s cyclists were treated to a free bit of kai.

Spokes Dunedin held their 10th annual Bike Breakfast, and it was bigger than ever, with about 250 people attending.

Funded by the council, Spokes committee members organised a free breakfast of muesli, yoghurt, fruit salad, croissants and coffee for cyclists at the Dunedin Railway Station to enjoy.

Committee member Heike Cebulla said the day was a good opportunity for bike users to get together to hang out, enjoy some food and talk about how cycling could be made safer and more enjoyable around the city.

"We just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the people who commute by bike, or any other active transport, and to provide them some free breakfast, and it has been a really enjoyable day.

"Consultation on how to improve the cycling experience is always ongoing, but this breakfast is the ideas hub once a year."

The day was waste free, people were asked to bring their own bowls, cups and cutlery.

Ms Cebulla was shocked but happily surprised so little of their backup cutlery had to be used.

The breakfast was held between 7am through to about 10am and was enjoyed by more than just the cyclists.

"It’s really communal. It’s all about coming together and sharing stories.

"We even had some of the cruise ship passengers coming in and having a croissant. One man even wanted some yoghurt and took away the rest of the communal pottle.

"He probably thought that is really nice of Dunedin to set up a buffet for us."

All leftover food was donated to Community House.
