Cyclist seriously injured in camper van collision

A cyclist sustained a serious head injury after colliding with a camper van in Dunedin on Saturday.

The man, understood to be a Canadian tourist, was in a serious but stable condition in  Dunedin Hospital’s intensive care unit yesterday, a hospital duty manager confirmed.

The Otago Daily Times understands the man’s family is flying from Canada to be with him.  A St John spokesman said an ambulance was deployed before 1pm on Saturday after a camper van and cyclist collided in Portobello Rd, near Scobie Rd, Vauxhall.

The cyclist, who is in his mid-30s, was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.

A police spokeswoman said diversions were put in place while emergency services attended the incident.

No-one had been charged. Few details were available about the crash.

"The cause of the collision is part of the investigation into the crash and as such there are no details available on this at the moment," the spokeswoman said.

"The driver of the camper van is assisting police with their ongoing inquiries."

Police wanted to talk to any witnesses to the crash.
