This was the target Dunedin’s Zen Hair salon co-directors Haley Cron and Liana King-Biddulph initially hoped to hit with their 24-hour charity hair cut-a-thon.
However, the amount raised "well exceeded" this figure, Ms Cron said.
About 100 people took the opportunity to get a new haircut, and about 10 hairdressers lent a hand over the course of the event, which began on Saturday at 4pm and finished at 4pm yesterday, Ms Cron said.
"It’s taken a village to get this far.
"We’re so proud of everyone that got involved."
The hospice was instrumental in supporting Ms Cron’s stepfather, who died last year.
They were running at a loss for the first time in a decade and she wanted others to be able to experience the same quality of support her family experienced, she said.
The fundraiser also included a raffle and silent auction.
A final tally would take place before they announced the exact amount raised tomorrow.
Ms King-Biddulph said the community support kept her feeling energised despite a lack of sleep, as did taking "very small naps".
"We’ve had lots of families come in, lots of kids. It’s a really nice event for people to be a part of," she said.
Local businesses had also pitched in to supply food and coffee to keep them going.
The cut-a-thon had taken a long time to plan, but the success of the event meant more fundraisers were likely to be "on the horizon" for the duo.
