Two men charged after fight in Hyde St

Two men have been charged after a fight broke out in a Hyde St flat last month, leaving three people with moderate injuries.

One person received puncture wounds in the incident, though it was unclear if he was stabbed or had fallen on something sharp.

Police described the incident as a ''mass brawl'' which occurred during a party.

A spokeswoman said yesterday a 26-year-old man had been charged with injuring with intent to injure and assault with intent to injure, and was due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on October 10.

A 20-year-old man had also been charged with injuring with intent to injure and was due to appear on November 1.

When asked whether any students had been disciplined, a university spokeswoman said the proctor's office had assisted police with their inquiries, but ''had not had any further involvement''.

Footage of the incident, captured on university CCTV cameras, was unavailable as the incident was before the court.

However, letters between the university proctor and a member of Dunedin police, obtained under an OIA, showed the university took issue with the police description of events.

''The 'mass brawl' you keep being quoted with in the media is not at all accurate. There was no 'mass brawl' and the footage supports this.

''We all know the media are seeking a salacious headline - it would be good not to give them one where it is not correct.''

The officer responded saying the phrase was a description from staff who had been at the scene.
