A bizarre burglary in which a seemingly intoxicated offender ordered a pizza minutes before breaking into a sushi store across the road from the Mosgiel Police Station has left staff shaken.
The Sushi Shop Mosgiel’s manager, who declined to give her full name, said the offender burst through the door, breaking off part of the lock and doorframe, about 7.35pm on Tuesday.
Security footage showed the man wore a hoodie, sweatpants and a cap and was likely in his late teens or early 20s.
He grabbed a container of curry, threw a screen off the till on to the floor, then put the curry back in the fridge and carried the till and an iPhone away.
The manager spoke to Domino’s staff next door, who said the man had ordered a pizza about five minutes before he entered The Sushi Shop, using the name "Jakob".
About $3000 worth of damage was done.
She said it was concerning it had happened across the road from the police station at a time when people were still around.
The suspect was likely the culprit behind a spate of broken windows in the area the previous night, she said.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said Mitre 10 and Audiology South, both in Gordon Rd, had windows smashed about 8pm. Police were investigating the incidents.
