Mirrors clipped, driver hit: police

Two vehicles clipping each other’s wing mirrors led to an alleged assault on Wednesday morning.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called following an assault of a motorist at 8.40am in Ravenswood Rd, St Clair.

A 38-year-old man was driving a white car up the road when his vehicle and a black one travelling down the road clipped each other’s wing mirrors while passing.

Both drivers got out of their vehicles and began a "heated exchange of words".

The driver of the white car was allegedly threatened by the occupants of the black car, who asked him whether he "wanted to fight over this?"

As a result, one of the passengers in the black vehicle allegedly punched the driver of the other vehicle in the face.

They then threw him to the ground and held his head against the pavement, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The assault was short-lived and the occupants of the black car drove away, he said.

Investigations were ongoing into the incident and police were following positive lines of inquiry, he said.
