Driver crashes into vehicles, flees police

A driver on a joyride around central Dunedin caused chaos for other drivers, crashing into other vehicles and swerving in and out of traffic while fleeing police.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police attempted to stop the driver for driving without a seatbelt in Cumberland St at 10.20am on Wednesday.

The green Toyota Corolla, with the registration number TF848, sped off and police abandoned
a pursuit a short time afterwards.

Police received calls from members of the public after the car was seen swerving across its lane and having several near misses with other vehicles in Police St.

A short time later the driver rammed a vehicle in Vogel St and crashed into another in Princes St.

Police have yet to find the Toyota car and its driver.
