Police are appealing for information after a bottle struck a constable and ripped his leg open in North Dunedin early on Saturday.
Inspector Wil Black, of Dunedin, said the officer was struck in the calf after an unknown person threw a bottle which skipped off the ground near the University of Otago.
"It's come off the ground and it's torn his calf.''
The glass cut through the muscle in his leg and he required treatment in Dunedin Hospital's Emergency Department.
The "seasoned veteran'' was itching to get back on the beat, Insp Black said.
"He's a hard man to hold down.''
Police were appealing for anyone who saw the incident or had any information to come forward, but were also reviewing CCTV footage.
