A man threw a metal grate at a member of the public after being caught trying to unlock cars in Central Dunedin on Saturday morning.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to a Liverpool St address to deal with a man who was caught trying door handles on vehicles on the street at 2.20am.

A 50-year-old man who matched the description and was under the influence of alcohol was arrested and charged with unlawful interference with a motor vehicle.

He had also thrown a metal grate at a member of the public and breached bail conditions after appearing in court the day before.

The man had appeared in court on charges of disorderly behaviour and unlawful
damage, Snr Sgt Bond said.

He should have been at his home address in Christchurch, he was not allowed to be drinking alcohol and was not to threaten or use violence against any person under his bail conditions, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The man will appear in Dunedin court today in regards to the new matter and the previous charges.
