The sun shone brightly on the University Oval yesterday, as players' fortunes ebbed and flowed on the field.

Two policemen, standing on the hill, were clearly happy to have been rostered on to patrol the game.

And 4-month-old Riley Culling was still smiling after four solid hours of test cricket.

Dunedin welcomed back international test cricket to its boutique oval yesterday, as Pakistan took on New Zealand, and the weather played its part.

On the hill, Riley was taking in his first test.

With his great-uncle, Dunedin sports commentator Steve Davie, in the commentators' box, and both his father Jared Culling, and mother Jamie Milford having played cricket, yesterday's match probably will not be his last.

"He's definitely having a good time," his father said.

"He's quite enjoying the atmosphere. He hasn't disturbed anyone else yet."

For Otago Cricket Association chief executive Ross Dykes, the day was "a great advertisement for how the game should be".

"I think from Otago Cricket's point of view, we were delighted with the day, firstly with the weather, which does make a difference to any sporting event."

The other aspect Mr Dykes was pleased with was the pitch, which had been "unquestionably good".

The crowd of about 1350 was "not huge", but there had been a good atmosphere at the ground, he said.
