Crash victim transferred to Dunedin

A 35-year-old woman was transferred to Dunedin Hospital yesterday following a car accident near Otautau, Western Southland on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Otautau Drummond Rd and Lindsay Calcium Rd, following a crash between an eastbound Mitsubishi V3000 car and a turning Mitsubishi RVR.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Terry, of Invercargill, said there were two people in each car.

Three people had to be freed by Fire Service staff.

All four occupants were taken to Southland Hospital with injuries.

The driver of the RVR remains in hospital with fractures and bruising, and his passenger was transferred to Dunedin Hospital yesterday morning with critical injuries, Snr Sgt Terry said.

The 28-year-old driver of the V3000 was discharged from hospital with minor injuries, and his 19-year-old passenger received knee and facial injuries and has undergone surgery.

Crash investigators were at the scene yesterday.

One person was killed and a young child injured in a crash in Canterbury last night.

The vehicle crashed on Old West Coast Rd near Darfield, 47km west of Christchurch, about 6.40pm.

One other person was killed on the roads this weekend after a crash on State Highway 2, 9km north of Dannevirke, in southern Hawkes Bay on Saturday night.
