High tides during winter caused some erosion to the ramp area near the Esplanade at St Clair and near the sand sausages. The work is to improve access to the beach.
The new sand sausages at Ocean Beach have not been damaged during their first full winter after the Dunedin City Council installed them on the erosion-plagued section of the city beach in August last year as a way to prevent further erosion of the surrounding sand dunes.
Council Three Waters group manager Tom Dyer said the work had improved access to the beach and made it easier for the St Clair Surf Life Saving Club to launch rescue boats.
High tides in winter caused some erosion near the ramp at the north end of the Esplanade in St Clair down to end of the sand sausages, Mr Dyer said.
``We just needed to do a little bit of tidy up work, which was largely cosmetic, and just ensure people could traverse the area safely.''
As the beach was a changing environment it would continue to need basic maintenance from time to time, Mr Dyer said.
``If we have a run of southerly storms, as we did over winter, erosion tends to get worse.''
The work was expected to cost about $5000.
