A fundraising concert will help a Dunedin singer realise a lifelong dream. Mezzo soprano Claire Barton has won a scholarship at the prestigious Trinity Laban College of Music in London after a successful audition in December.

"It's really exciting. I completely fell in love with Greenwich when I was there for the audition. I've seen a lot of other singers go overseas to study and now the opportunity is there for me to do it," she said this week.

"You wouldn't do this sort of thing unless you really loved it."

Barton (30) won the 2007 Otago Daily Times Aria and was a Lexus finalist the same year. She was also runner-up in the New Zealand Aria last year.

She will will leave Dunedin for London next month to start a year-long post-graduate artist diploma at the college.

"I've got a partial scholarship from Trinity, but I've still got find about $25,000 to cover my fees and living expenses." The concert, at the town hall on August 20, will feature the City of Dunedin Choir and the Dunedin RSA choir and include items of opera, oratorio, music theatre and glam rock.
