There are plans for a new landfill for Dunedin at Smooth Hill, in Big Stone Rd, about 6km southeast of the airport, between Brighton and Waihola.
The plans have some locals concerned, and a community meeting was held in Brighton on Monday where residents questioned Dunedin City Council staff.
Mr Roberts said that any activity near the airport that might attract birds "of any kind" was of concern as it could have serious consequences for aircraft using the airport.
The airport company did not have any other specific concerns.
The council had advised the airport it would keep it fully informed and had done so to date, Mr Roberts said.
Council information on the proposed new landfill says if it is established at Smooth Hill it will be run with modern techniques that prevents scavenger activity by covering rubbish immediately.
The aim was to create the same conditions as at the Kate Valley Landfill in Christchurch, which did not attract seagulls or other pests because it buried rubbish quickly, it said.
The Smooth Hill landfill would be a similar distance from the sea as the Kate Valley landfill.
Comments
Perhaps this is pie-in-the-sky thinking but has the idea of NO landfill been considered? The DCC could genuinely throw its weight behind recycling (instead of the tokenism it currently pursues) and the small amount of genuinely non-recyclable material could be transported (by rail) to Kate Valley landfill north of Christchurch (or another regional landfill that would accept it). No need for a local landfill and no need for the disruption and cost. However, such a bold move would require courageous and innovative thinking by Dunedin councillors and council managers. So not likely to happen then.
