Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei and Green MP Marama Davidson met University of Otago students yesterday to discuss inequality, cold houses and the possibility of a housing warrant of fitness.

The campus visit to the University of Otago Clubs and Societies building was the third on the MPs' national tertiary tour.

Ms Davidson said she had heard "lots of stories that are unravelling me'' about cold houses.

She told the group of six at the meeting she recalled going into her children's cold rooms at night.

"The gut thing that hit me was how insulting it was, and I was doing my best to keep them warm.''

Some students at the meeting said they lived in cold houses but did not want to raise the issue with their landlords because their rent was cheap.

The MPs' next meeting will be at Victoria University, Wellington, on Monday.
