Clam alert

Possibly unaware its activity caused a water rescue callout, Southern Clams barge Tuaki makes its way up Otago Harbour as the oil tanker Torea (at right) departs, yesterday morning.

Police began a water rescue mission when a caller from Roseneath, near Port Chalmers, reported what appeared to be people bailing water from a boat which looked to be very low in the water about 9.20am.

The rescue mission was aborted about 9.45am when it was discovered the vessel in "distress" was the barge, sitting low in the water with its load of clams.
