City driving times make for ease

Drivers in traffic-clogged cities across Australasia may spend some time in their next traffic jam considering the benefits of driving in Dunedin.

A survey of "peak" traffic times in the city, measured during the morning peak period, shows how long it takes to travel by car from various suburbs to the Octagon.

Drivers in Auckland, Sydney or Melbourne, who can take up to 10 minutes to drive a few blocks, may be interested to know the Dunedin City Council survey found only two of the suburbs, Mosgiel and Waverley, took more than 10 minutes for the entire journey, those trips taking 19 minutes and 12 minutes respectively.

The drive from St Clair took 10 minutes, and from Brockville eight minutes.

The travel times were well within the council's target of less than 22 minutes from Mosgiel, and less than 15 minutes from other suburbs.

The council would continue to measure the times so it could monitor trends, Ms Connolly said.
