Chopper rescues pair from harbour mudflats

A helicopter crew has rescued two people from an area of mudflats on Otago Harbour this afternoon.

The two men had been diving and were on their way back into shore when their boat started to take on water.

A police spokeswoman said the pair, who were wearing wetsuits, made it to the mudflats near Aramoana and called for help.

Police, Coastguard Dunedin and Harbour Tug all helped with the rescue.

The pair were successfully extracted from the mudflats by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter, she said.

There were two rescue swimmers on board the helicopter but they were not needed, the spokeswoman said.
