The middle of winter proves a chilly time for many Dunedin families and a collection of charity organisations helped keep residents warm on Saturday.

The Valley Project organised and invited the Bedding Bank, Curtain Bank, Stitch Kitchen and Presbyterian Support Otago Energy Mates along to the Valley Baptist Community Centre to dish out free blankets, curtains, clothes and woollens.

The Valley Baptist Church cooked warm soups for attendees and anyone who came in wanting a bowl.

They served daal, minestrone soup and a Japanese curry.

Valley Project manager Jen Rodgers said Dunedin was cold and there was a community out there struggling with the cost of living.

"We just wanted to provide a warm place people could come to and get some warm clothes, blankets and a free lunch."

People were also invited to bring in clothing which needed mending, and the team from the Stitch Kitchen would help repair the outfit, as well as share some pointers on how to mend holes and damage.

"This is the second time we’ve done this and we had a really good response, so we decided we should do it again."

Everything in the community centre was donated by the public and free for the taking.

As soon as the doors opened people started to pile in and blankets, clothing and curtains started to go.

Ms Rodgers said if last year was anything to go by, they would be cleaned out by 2pm, when the event ended.

The Bedding Bank was particularly popular, but if anyone missed out, they could write their names down and the staff would organise bedding for them after the event.
