Hundreds came out to peruse Dunedin’s prettiest pedigrees and fuzziest felines as the city’s annual cat show returned.

Sixty cats were on display at the annual Cat Show and Artisan Market, run by the Southern Cross All Breeds Cat Club, at the Taieri Bowling Club in Mosgiel yesterday.

Club president Zena Pigden said there were all manner of cats on display, from American shorthairs to toygers.

The competition was not just restricted to pedigrees in the long hair and short hair sections, as household pets could be entered in the domestic companion category.

Each of the four judges declared their winners of each category and worked together to decide one supreme winner from each.

It was the first show for about 18 months because of Covid-19.

A recent addition to the show was a border of velvet rope, which helped people better see the cats and stopped them from getting stressed.

Cat owner Heather Strang was showcasing her Persian kitten Lulu, also known by the pedigree name Taniver Bear Picked My Pocket.

The pedigree name was a way to trace the authenticity of the breeding, she said.

Lulu was 5 months old and new to shows, but handled it well and had won a best-in-show award.

Mrs Strang had been showing cats for about four years and said the main difference between a show cat and a classic pet was the level of grooming they required.

A lot of bathing was involved, she said.
