Carnival parade tonight

The lights will be dimmed in Dunedin tonight for the 2012 Dunedin Midwinter Carnival.

The annual celebration of the longest night of the year is expected to draw up to 10,000 people to the Octagon.

The carnival has "A Frosty Night" theme this year and Jack Frost and the Snow Queen will be among the parade of nearly 400 candle-lit lanterns around the Octagon.

The procession will also feature Maori performance group Manawa Kapahaka, with poi performers, African dance troupe Koru Dance and the Songbong drummers.

The Octagon will be closed to traffic from 2pm until 8pm.

The event starts at 5.30pm, with the carnival procession at 6pm.

If weather conditions are unfavourable, the carnival will be held tomorrow, with any postponement announced at noon today on the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival website, midwintercarnival.co.nz
