Dunedin's Midwinter Carnival, due to take place last night, has been put off until this evening at the same time.
Organisers decided at 5.30pm yesterday to postpone the event due to heavy rain and wind which hit the city about 4.30pm, announcing the cancellation by loud speaker in the Octagon.
The food stalls which had set up at 5pm had decided to remain on site in the Octagon and people were invited to still go along if they wanted.
The main event of the lantern parade and fireworks will be held at 6pm tonight.
Weather also disrupted Queenstown's Winter Festival yesterday, causing organisers to reschedule two events.
Following heavy rain in the resort, the Birdman and Mountain Bikes on Snow were postponed until today.
