Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets carefree and carless for World Car-Free Day on Tuesday, September 22.
The Dunedin City Council is encouraging residents to take in spring by using alternatives to their private cars.
Council senior transportation planner Sarah Weller said, along with making roads safer and the environment cleaner, this allowed commuters to take time out of their day to think.
"Whether it be gazing out the window or reading a book, you get space and time to think and relax when you're not driving."
One option on the day is a train being chartered by the council.
The Taieri Gorge Railway will take commuters from Waitati to Dunedin.
The train will leave Waitati at 7.30am, stopping at Michies Crossing, Osbourne, Purakaunui, Mihiwaka, Sawyers Bay, and Maia before arriving in Dunedin at 8.30am.
A return trip will leave Dunedin Railway Station at 5.45pm.
Tickets are $5 per person, each way.
