Rescuers carry an injured man up a bank after his car flipped several times in a high-speed crash on the Southern Motorway near Mosgiel yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called just before 11am and firefighters cut a 46-year-old man, the sole occupant, from the vehicle, Acting Senior Sergeant Nathan White said.

The man, who was believed not to have been wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, was taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries. He ''was talking and answering questions at the scene''.

Witness Mitch Burford, who pulled over and dialled 111 after seeing the crash, said the car was travelling at excessive speed and had ''a couple of close passes'' before it went off the road.

''He was doing close to 200kmh, easy,'' Mr Burford said.
