A Dunedin family took a share of the honours at the 2017 Otago Wildlife Photography Competition at Otago Museum on Saturday.

Melissa Purnell and her children Jack (10) and Emily (7) Aubin won seven prizes or commendations at the competition.

Mrs Purnell was highly commended in the plant category for photographers 15 years and older for her image Lily Pond at the Dunedin Botanic Garden.

She was also highly commended in the human impact on the environment category, open to all ages, for her image Signal Hill Fire Fight, taken from Dunedin suburb Dalmore.

She was ''very happy'' with the recognition of her work.

''I wasn't expecting it.''

Jack won the animal category for photographers aged 14 and younger for his image Tui on Target, taken at Dunedin Botanic Garden.

The North East Valley School pupil said he was ''pretty amazed'' by the win.

Another photo he took, of the family's cat, Charlie, was selected to be used as the image to promote the exhibition, which opened after the prizegiving.

Emily won the pet category for photographers aged 14 and younger for the photo Charlie, the Tawny Abyssinian, taken in Dalmore.

She was also highly commended in the pet category for photographers aged 14 and younger for her image Monty Visits the Otago Museum, a picture of a horse taken outside the museum.

As well, she was highly commended in the plant category for photographers aged 14 and younger for her image Blue Hydrangea, taken at her grandmother's house in Dalmore.

She was ''nervous'' when she was named as a prizewinner at the ceremony.

''But I was so happy when I got it,'' she said.

Emily, who also attends the North East Valley School, had entered the competition for the first time.

Jack had entered three times and won prizes last year, including the jury prize.
