Workers adjust the tension of a cable on the soon-to-be opened Water of Leith  cycle-pedestrian bridge yesterday afternoon.

Dunedin City Council transport group manager Richard Saunders said the cable-stay bridge was able to support its own weight so the cables were not attached during construction.

However, the  cables were required for the bridge to meet its design requirements, and were load-bearing, he said.

The bridge is set to be officially opened next Saturday.

The main span of the bridge features 12 spiral strand cables running from the 20m steel mast to the bridge platform, six on each side.

The back span is made up of six cables, three on each side, connecting to a dead-man anchor behind the bridge.

The  bridge includes a 600mm freeboard for a projected 100-year flood, plus a 250mm climate change allowance, according to a design drawing.
