Breakfast wake-up surprise

The snap, crackle and pop coming from the kitchen was not the breakfast a North Dunedin resident was expecting.

She was given a rude awakening when a tree came crashing through the roof of her Park St student flat, during the wild weather which struck the city yesterday morning.

"My flatmate was taking a nap upstairs when it crashed into our roof. It was very loud," she said.

The flatmate, who also declined to be named, said it smashed into the house from the neighbouring hilltop, leaving a small hole in the roof.

The flatmates were evacuated and Fire and Emergency New Zealand staff from Willowbank Station cordoned off the area about 11.30am.

It was one of many trees in the city which toppled in winds that reached 78kmh yesterday.

A birch tree in St Clair resident Marty Smith’s front yard tumbled on the corner of Isadore St and Middleton Rd earlier in the day.

He woke to see the flashing lights of a Fulton Hogan truck assessing the damage.

The 8m-tall, 35-year-old tree was sprawled over the footpath and the roots tore up a good portion of Mr Smith’s front lawn.

"It was a lovely old tree. It’s a shock to see it gone," he said.

The tree was later removed by Fulton Hogan.
