A cyclist for 32 years, Mr Hughes estimates he has clocked up more than a million kilometres in the saddle, including 110km a day since Waitangi Day.
The avid cyclist was one of about 150 who braved the heavy rain and were rewarded with a free breakfast organised by cycling advocacy group Spokes Dunedin.
Spokes Dunedin chairman Jon Dean said while the rain meant the number of cyclists at the breakfast was far fewer than the 700 who attended last year, he was still pleased with the turnout.
''We got a really diverse range of cyclist coming down this time around, which is really cool.''
The annual breakfast event provides cyclists with an opportunity to give feedback on cycling in city, check some of the latest cycling technology and get a quick tune-up.
