Boat fall victim Dunedin man

Police have confirmed the man who died after falling from a boat off the coast of South Dunedin was a 57-year-old Dunedin resident.

Emergency services responded to a mayday call from fishing vessel Venture about a person overboard, about 18km off the coast of South Dunedin, about 1.30pm on Monday.

A Maritime New Zealand spokesman said an Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter, the Coastguard and fishing vessel Cloud Break attended.

A police spokeswoman said the person was pulled from the water and medical attention was provided, but the man died at the scene.

A Maritime NZ spokesman said it was investigating the incident.

Examining the vessel, reviewing documents and other records, interviewing people, and an assessment of weather and sea conditions at the time the incident occurred would be included in the investigation, the spokesman said.

Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou Inc manager Nadia Wesley-Smith said a rāhui (temporary closure) had been placed on the waters off the coast of South Dunedin.

The rāhui covered the currents and tidal movements between White and Green islands and would be lifted today at 1.30pm, she said.

The death has been referred to the coroner.
