A family of birds nesting in a Dunedin traffic light will not be forced to fly the coop.

The Dunedin City Council dispatched transportation staff to assess the situation yesterday, after the Otago Daily Times photographed a pair of blackbirds caring for their chicks inside a red light cowling.

Council chief executive Sue Bidrose said there were no safety concerns "at the moment", so the birds would be allowed to stay for now.

"We don’t want this young family to fly the nest too soon as they seem happy where they are.

"Like any good landlord, we’ll do regular inspections to make sure they’re not causing any problems," she said.
