Big picture at DNTV reunion

Looking at the present and future of broadcasting in Dunedin as well as the past kept former employees of DNTV from getting too nostalgic at the weekend.

About 150 people from all aspects of the Dunedin television station's history reunited at Natural History New Zealand (NHNZ) in Melville St, Dunedin, on Saturday to mark the 50th anniversary of its inaugural broadcast, which occurred at 6.30pm on Tuesday, July 31, 1962, from the Garrison Hall in Dowling St.

Faces that would be familiar to many included Dougal Stevenson, who started in 1964.

Also taking part were Catherine Saunders, who started 1962, NHNZ managing director Michael Stedman, who started in 1964, and those who worked behind the scenes such as Dave Howell, who was the sound operator for the first broadcast.

Mr Howell, the reunion organiser, said while it was a nostalgia-filled event and included visits to the Garrison Hall, Toitu Otago Settlers Museum - to look at its collection of historic broadcasting equipment - the former Albany St radio studio and the Mt Cargill transmitter, it was also a chance to see what the present and future of broadcasting looked like with visits to NHNZ and Animation Research Ltd yesterday.
