A Dunedin engineering company owner hopes the $39.9 million contract, which will see 17 train carriages manufactured in Dunedin, will bring benefits for smaller businesses like his.

EB McDonald Ltd already refurbishes stainless steel carriage doors and window frames for Hillside Engineering, as well as manufacturing doors, hand rails, automatic door opening systems and other components.

It is work which occupies five of Greg Wansink's 17 staff full-time, and he said yesterday he hoped companies like his could secure a slice of the new work.

"It's really good news for Dunedin, and for companies like ours.

"The Hillside success story has already been very good for us and we hope that continues."

EB McDonald Ltd started 50 years ago making wool presses and shearing tables and had diversified over the years into the production of orchard equipment, such as conveyor belts, fruit grading systems and frames for netting.

While the factory had been "seasonally quiet" in recent weeks, Mr Wansink said any increase in production for Hillside Engineering would ensure continuity of work for staff.
