Dunedin arborist Peter Waymouth hopes to help improve the learning experience of arborists worldwide.

Mr Waymouth has just been invited by the International Society of Arborists to join its education advisory committee.

He believes his mix of practical experience and having participated in the society's entire education programme before completing his master arborist qualification online gave him something to contribute.

"After coming through the process from the ground up I hope my enthusiasm for this new method of learning can be of use in the committee overview."

Late last year, the society launched an e-learning centre for arborists, allowing "24/7" access to interactive courses and quizzes.

Mr Waymouth believed for young New Zealand arborists, who already receive a sound education at various courses in this country, e-learning with the society would be an additional pathway to internationally recognised qualifications.

While having been a climbing arborist for 30 years, Mr Waymouth said he had learnt a great deal through the society's courses.

"While the science of it never changes, the techniques have changed rapidly."

Mr Waymouth flies to Baltimore in the United States in November to attend the society's meetings and the Tree Care Industry Association conference.

Also involved in the society are Dunedin arborists Mark Roberts (board member) and David Glenn (certification committee).
