Dunedin police investigating an assault in the city yesterday have been left in an unusual situation in which they have the alleged offender in custody, but no victim.
Senior Sergeant Ed Baker said an independent witness contacted police about 4am yesterday, to report an assault near the corner of Lower Stuart St and Moray Pl.
Following a description of the alleged offender provided by the witness, police were able to track down a 22-year-old Dunedin man, who was taken into custody and charged with assault.
However, Snr Sgt Baker said the victim had left before police arrived, and they were now concerned for his welfare.
"The victim had taken a few serious hits," he said.
The victim was described as a male Maori or Polynesian with pale skin, of slim build, short to average height, and was wearing a checkered short-sleeved top.
"We are concerned for his welfare, but we would also like to speak to him for evidential purposes," Snr Sgt Baker said.
