Emergency services were called to an early-morning car fire on State Highway 1 near Dunedin.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said police were called to the Northern Motorway to assist fire trucks with reports of a burning vehicle about 1am today.
The car was believed to have been abandoned for several days, Snr Sgt Bond said.
