$30,000 wind damage estimate

It could cost as much as $30,000 to clean up Dunedin's parks and reserves after damaging winds last month, city council parks and reserves team leader Martin Thompson says.

Contractors dealt with damage at 53 locations after the December 21 winds and a further 25 sites were identified to be cleaned up over the next two to three weeks, he said yesterday.

Most of the work involved clearing broken branches and other debris from the ground. By December 31, that had cost $21,000. Another $5000 was spent clearing the botanic garden.

Mr Thompson expected to have a better idea of costs in the coming weeks, but he "guesstimated" another $10,000 might have been added to the bill since New Year.

Few trees were blown over in the gusts, which reached 155kmh at Swampy Summit and knocked out powerlines, lifted roofs and smashed windows across the city and surrounds.

The wind left such a mess that contractors first concentrated on gathering the debris in piles at some reserves, and some piles were waiting to be cleared a fortnight later.
