Apart from their fame, what do Marilyn Monroe and John Wayne have in common?

Their doll doubles will be auctioned off in Dunedin today, as up to 1000 dolls from six Otago collectors and doll makers go under the hammer at Hayward's Auction House.

Doll maker Glenda Scoullar, of Milton, has 248 dolls, 50 teddy bears and several doll's houses on offer.

The 64-year-old started making porcelain dolls 25 years ago to pass the time while her husband was on night shift and her children in bed.

Mrs Scoullar said there was an art to doll making and it took a lot of time.

''I've had lots of fun with them; my house was full of them.''

Her two daughters, who now live in Australia, also make teddy bears in their spare time.

Hayward Auction House owner and auctioneer Kevin Hayward said the 1000 dolls ranged from full porcelain dolls, to porcelain-faced dolls with soft bodies, right through to Franklin Mint Dolls, which fielded a big price tag in their day.

One of the dolls had originally cost $2000, he said.

Mrs Scoullar said she was looking forward to travelling the country in her motorhome.

She was not concerned with how much the dolls fetched as long as they went to ''a happy home''.
