Clutha District mayoress Allyson Cadogan says there are no major drawbacks in being the wife of the Mayor.

"There's no real downside. Bryan loves it, he loves talking to people, and there's always the chance to meet new people through functions and events.

I'm meeting a lot of new people, and a lot of lovely people."

Just a year into Mr Cadogan's term as Mayor, she is finding more confidence in dealing with the public.

When she is not working or attending mayoral functions, Mrs Cadogan is happy spending time in the garden, baking, or renovating the couple's new home.

She and her husband shifted house in September, working around Mr Cadogan's busy schedule as Mayor.

Moving house was not an easy task, and there were many meetings and events during September for the couple to work around.

"For a while, there were boxes everywhere, but we've settled in now," Mrs Cadogan said.

The Cadogans owned and operated the 100% Electrical store in Balclutha for 14 years but sold the retail business in April so Mr Cadogan could focus solely on being the Mayor and dedicate his time to Clutha.

Mrs Cadogan used to work both at the shop and with disability support service PACT, splitting her time between the two.

"Things were really, really busy when we had the shop. Selling it has taken a bit of the pressure off."

She now works as a community support worker with PACT, working from the Balclutha centre. About five months into the job, she enjoys working with people and helping others.

Her husband's demanding role does not faze her and she says she is happy to support him.

"Bryan is busier than he's ever been in his life, but he loves it. He works every day, and most weekends - on the go all the time - but he always makes time for me and the kids."

The couple have two children, Paula (24) and Sam (22).

And Mr Cadogan appreciates her support and willingness to help out.

"Ally is fantastic. She's involved, supportive and very understanding."
