Tim Cadogan is the mayor of Central Otago.

What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?

My daughter Beccie once arranged a personal autographed copy of Fleur Sullivan's autobiography, which was very special.

And my wife Linda once got me a flight in a glider after I had waxed lyrical about how good it looked from the ground. She forgot I am not a great flyer, but I enjoyed the experience nonetheless.

What smell do you find irresistible?

Ashamedly, K-fry.

If you were going to an island and could take only three things, what would they be and why?

My family, as they are the centre of my world, a kindle full of books (although I way prefer reading old-school proper books) and my guitar.

What's something only your family knows about you?

I can't be trusted with chocolate.

You are a new addition to the crayon box. What colour are you, and why?

The incredible blue of a Central Otago winter sky, because it is a colour I never tire of looking at and living under.
