What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?

A surprise 50th birthday party. It was good fun.

What smell do you find irresistible?

The fresh smell of the garden on dewy mornings.

What is your least favourite thing about humanity?

Selfishness and greed. We must do better.

What is one strong childhood memory?

Running free on summer holidays at Naseby. The popping of broom pods on hot days on the way to the swimming dam, where we would sink our feet in the muddy bottom and have close encounters with beautiful dragonflies.

You are a new addition to the crayon box. What colour are you, and why?

Blue and gold; the colours of Central Otago. They were the colours I dreamt of during grey February days in London on my OE during the 1960s.
