Merlot and cabernet merlot blends can vary from punchy tannic wines with every last drip of fruit and oak extracted that call attention to themselves, to gentler, more balanced wines that invite another sip and obligingly fit in with what you are eating.
This batch of mostly New Zealand wines showed some good wines in the mid-$20 price range, some of which may be found on special.

Brown Brothers Patrica Victoria Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
$55
Four stars (out of five)
Average value
A stylish wine from across the Tasman, Patricia is the top of the Brown Brothers range.
It's older than the New Zealand wines in this tasting and perfumed with hints of eucalyptus flowers, nutmeg and malt, with a smooth, silky texture and firm, slightly chewy tannins.
It's drinking well now, but should continue to mature for a few years yet.
