Dunedin resident Rodney Griffiths has completed an apprenticeship on a high note, winning two national awards, as the best final year flooring apprentice and the country's top overall flooring apprentice.

Mr Griffiths (22), who grew up in Dunedin and had attended Otago Boys High School, was "ecstatic" about his success in the New Zealand Flooring Industry Training Organisation National Apprentice of the Year Awards.

"It's a big achievement for me," he said.

As well as trophies and certificates, he also received vouchers, cash and goods amounting to about $3000.

The success also reflected positively on his Dunedin employer, Justin Bell, of Justin Bell Flooring, he said.

Mr Griffiths, who completed his apprenticeship late last year, received the awards at a recent function in Christchurch, attended by more than 200 people, including Commerce Minister Simon Power.

Mr Power praised the award winners and their employers for their commitment to excellence in training and also acknowledged the positive outcomes achieved by the Flooring ITO.
