Toughest of locks keeps chugging on

The iron man will bring up 400 games tomorrow night.

All Black lock Brad Thorn will play his 400th major game - rugby and league combined - when he fronts up to the French at Eden Park.

Thorn, the rugged lock, played exactly half of those games for the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL, having two stints with the club, first from 1994-2000, and then again from 2005-07.

He has played 92 games for the Crusaders, starting against the Brumbies in 2001, and finishing with the franchise with the loss to the Reds in this year's Super 15 final.

Thorn (36) played eight tests for the Kangaroos but has played considerably more test games in the 15-man code.

Tonight will be his 55th cap for the All Blacks, which is, incidentally, the same tally as another tough New Zealand forward, one Colin Meads.

Thorn's achievement of logging up the hefty numbers is all the more remarkable considering he took the entire 2002 season off.

He has been relatively injury-free and one of the first players selected by coaches in either code.

Meads played 361 first-class games, while former Taranaki lock Ian Eliason played the most games for one union, racking up 222 for his province.

Thorn's former Broncos team-mate, Darren Lockyer, has just set the NRL appearance record and sits on 355 games.

Former Manly forward Steve Menzies played 349 games in the NRL and has played 75 games in the Super League in Europe, so has played more combined games.

Thorn, who was born in Mosgiel and spent some of his early years in Cromwell, is leaving to play in Japan after the World Cup, having signed a two-year deal to play for Fukuoka Sanix Blues.
